Cold brew coffee is much different than iced coffee. Iced coffee is just hot coffee that’s been brewed strongly and poured over ice (or hot coffee that’s been refrigerated) whereas cold brew coffee never touches hot water.

Instead, coarse coffee grounds are steeped in cold water for anywhere from 12-24 hours to create a cold brew concentrate that’s less acidic, less bitter, and much smoother than iced coffee. Cold brew coffee concentrate is super strong, and needs some water or milk added (usually two or three parts water or milk to one part cold brew).

But you don’t have to hit up your local coffee shop to get a great cup of cold brew. You can make it at home, and it’s super easy! We’ve developed a recipe that’s simple to follow and yields great results every time.

How to Make It

Step 1

Combine coffee grounds and cold water in a large container with a tight-fitting lid. Stir gently, cover, and let sit for 12-24 hours (we let ours sit for 16 hours).

Step 2

When cold brew has steeped for an adequate amount of time, pour the mixture through a mesh sieve lined with a double layer of cheesecloth. If cold brew looks murky, you may want to pass it through clean cheesecloth 1-2 more times until no sediment remains.

Step 3

When cold brew concentrate is ready, mix with 1-2 parts cold water or milk and enjoy!
